The October 1999 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Program

During September and October, visit the first page of this Calendar section to see News from NBCAM, an illustrated news item that will change frequently from one of the 18 organizations on the 1999 NBCAM Board of Sponsors.

NBCAM at NABCO

Every October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), a fact well known both within and outside of the breast cancer community in the United States. Television, newspapers and magazines focus coverage on facts about the disease, on progress in research and on the personal stories of survivors. Corporate supporters plan special programs and worksite screening events, and local and state governments issue proclamations and distribute information.

NABCO has been an active supporter of NBCAM for more than ten years as a member of the program's Board of Sponsors. Each year, NABCO member organizations receive a NBCAM Promotion Kit to help them plan their activities, and we offer technical assistance to medical professionals seeking ideas, materials and guidance as they finalize their events. Inquiries to NABCO's toll free number -- (888) 80-NABCO -- and NABCO website pages served build seasonally, beginning in August, and reach their peak in late September/early October. As a result of positive media coverage and NABCO mentions, average inquiry volume can nearly double during this busy time.

NABCO plans and participates in our own local and national events each October. This year's plans will include supporting the second annual Avon 3-Day WalkTM in Southern California, partnering with Lifetime Television for its Fall educational campaign on good breast health, educating members of Weight Watchers International with a special brochure, and benefiting from sales of Symphony Scarves and Bosom Buddies -- a new book co-authored by Rosie O'Donnell -- and the new Sew for the CureTM fundraising campaign.

Each October and over the months leading up to it, one of the most active areas for NABCO has been offering spokespeople, assistance and information to members of print and broadcast media. The NABCO Online Calendarsm has proven useful in expanding media coverage of local events and in connecting reporters to both local and national sources of breast health expertise.

About NBCAM

Many of us automatically think of October as a time to focus on breast cancer education and breast health awareness -- but when and how did it get started?

The Board of Sponsors of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide educational campaign directed to the general public, state and federal governments, health care professionals, employers, and women of all age and ethnic groups. The first week-long NBCAM program took place in October 1985 with a goal to fill the information void in public communication about breast cancer.

The two founding members of the Board of Sponsors distributed brochures, spoke to news reporters, and testified before a U.S. congressional committee about the crucial need for widespread access to mammography.

Former First Lady Betty Ford and her daughter Susan Ford Bales made an emotional appeal in a national public service announcement. Soon after, political figures, celebrities, industry executives, community leaders, members of the media, nonprofit organizations, and many individual women further galvanized widespread public interest.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed official legislation proclaiming October 19 to be National Mammography Day. Now National Mammography Day is celebrated the third Friday in October every year.

Today, the combined involvement of 18 national public service organizations, professional associations, and government agencies ensures that NBCAM reaches millions of people across the United States. But this could not happen without the dedication of NBCAM Board of Sponsors.

National Mammography Day

National Mammography Day, officially proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993, is held on the third Friday of October every year. On October 15 this year, providers all across the country will educate women about the importance of mammography and encourage women who haven't had regular screenings to do so. Last year, nearly 2,000 American College of Radiology (ACR)-accredited facilities took part in National Mammography Day, with many free or discounted screening mammograms either offered on that day or throughout the month. The American College of Radiology, a Board of Sponsors member, coordinates National Mammography Day as an official National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Board of Sponsor activity.

This October, for the first time National Mammography Day will include a special program, designed to reach low-income, uninsured or underinsured women in underserved areas across the nation using mobile mammography units. Underserved and poor populations are a focus this year because the rate at which poor women are getting screened continues to lag behind the female population as a whole. While the breast cancer mortality rate has dropped for white women and Hispanics in the past few years, it has remained fairly constant for African-American women. The goal of NBCAM's mobile unit program is to reach as many African-American women -- as well as other minorities -- in underserved areas as possible with high quality, accessible screening mammography. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be helping to promote this new program as part of the CDC's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, now offering free breast and cervical cancer screening to poor women in every state and Puerto Rico.

National Mammography Day is the direct service component of NBCAM, and will take place on Friday, October 15, 1999. On this day, participating American College of Radiology-accredited mammography providers will offer free or low-cost screening, special programs or extended hours. These facilities are listed on the Calendar in the "screening" category for each state.
